Filming is complete, the camera crew has packed up, and the production dust has begun to settle. But this is not the end of the work on the video project; it is just the beginning. At this moment, you have raw material that probably does not yet look like what was imagined, on paper, or on storyboards. Time for post-production.

From this article, you will learn:

  • What is video post-production and what are its benefits?

  • What does sound and image post-production include?

  • What is broadcasting?

  • What do the basic terms mean?

What is video post-production and what are its benefits?

Post-production is called a multi-stage process that occurs after the completion of recording and is the final phase before video broadcasting. It is combining and refining raw material by adding visual effects, color correction, and sound design. Post-production can be thought of as synchronization that gives the commercial its final, unified shape.

But is the harmony of sound and image the only benefit of such an, otherwise, expensive process? Carefully executed post-production significantly raises the technical and artistic quality of the film. A refined image and sound are born; the story being told gains structure and a smooth narrative that is understandable to the viewer. The whole thing turns into a project filled with emotions and atmosphere.

What does sound and image post-production include?

Sound

Sound post-production encompasses all activities that involve creating and refining the audio track. This is the moment when sound synchronization with the image, cleaning of recorded audio, and adding missing elements take place. Sound designers also handle recording and choosing sound effects, which they then combine with music or dialogue. Then all layers are mixed during the final mix. What is the purpose of all this? Building a full, realistic sound.

Image

Image post-production, on the other hand, analogously covers all work related to the visual layer of the video. Thus, it involves the editing of individual scenes, color correction, and other adjustments, as well as additional elements like, for example, shot stabilization and frame cleaning. It is also the time to add all remaining elements, such as graphics, titles, animations, and special effects. Thanks to post-production, we get a clean and consistent image.

What is broadcasting?

Broadcasting is the final stage of work on a video project. When all elements of post-production have been completed and approved, it is time to deliver the material to the audience. Broadcasting is, in other words, publication. At this stage, the creators deliver the final material to the selected distribution channels, in accordance with the media plan.

Basic concepts

Offline - the stage of assembling a film, during which shots are selected and combined into a coherent sequence according to the assumptions of the script.

Timeline - a graphical timeline in audio and video editing software where clips are arranged.

Color correction - basic image correction so that colors look natural and realistic. It adjusts white balance, exposure, contrast, and saturation to make the image "correct."

Color grading - creative color styling that gives a film or photo a specific mood, emotion, or cinematic look. This is the artistic stage after color correction.

VFX - computer-generated visual effects added during the post-production stage. They allow the creation of elements that could not be captured by the camera or that do not exist in reality at all.

Rendering - processing the finished audio and video project from the final timeline into the destination file. During rendering, the software exports the entire commercial into the selected format (e.g., MP4, MOV) and resolution.

Summary

It is thanks to the masters of post-production, their work, and experience, that we can watch films like AvatarBatman, or The Hobbit. But not only that – because a professionally conducted post-production process is the moment when the final product is created. In a word – it is a game worth the candle.
